Nezaket Türkel, PhD

Molecular Oncology Researcher and Genetic Engineer
I started my molecular biology and genetics adventure at Boğaziçi University, not only because it was a professional field but also because it was my passion. Ever since I can remember, I have always been a child who loved details and the toy I wanted the most was a microscope. During my PhD studies at the University of Melbourne in Australia, I had the opportunity to do all kinds of experiments with all kinds of microscopes after meeting many types of microscopes that I could not even imagine. I think I enjoyed this part the most throughout my entire education life. This passion for microscopes also turned into painting what I saw after a while. The fact that science and art have always been the freest fields where you can reflect while challenging your imagination has always made me feel that I have achieved the perfect harmony in my mind.

Being a scientist is an incredibly liberating feeling. I think it is one of the greatest blessings of the modern world that you can dream and then pursue those dreams anywhere in the world with other scientists who have the same dream as you. Thanks to this, I had the opportunity to work at EMBL (European Molecular Biology Laboratories) in Heidelberg during my undergraduate and graduate education, CSIC in Barcelona, LSI at the University of Michigan, and in many laboratories in Australia for the longest time for my PhD studies. Finally, after my return to Turkey, I joined the Department of Genetics and Biotechnology at Yeditepe University. During my academic life, I have worked in many different but related fields from stem cells to aging, from the most basic causes of cancer to the discovery of a new cancer-causing gene, and I have published many publications and even patented some of my studies. In addition to all these studies, I also give lectures on genetic counseling and nutrigenomics. It is very valuable for me to be able to share both my own knowledge in these different but related fields and the increasing knowledge pool in the scientific world with new publications.

Apart from the important roles of science and art in my life, I am also a wellness coach affiliated to the Ministry of Sports, teaching healthy living and especially fascia stretching modules.

I like to balance science, art, sports and family. Discovering the beauty of life in every moment is a passion for me and I enjoy sharing this passion with others.

The Genetic Legacy of Energy

We examine comprehensive information about mitochondrial DNA and heredity, which is passed from mother to child, and the effects of exercise at the cellular level.

How about a good cleaning as we head into winter? And on a cellular level!

In my previous article, I talked about cellular senescence (aging), cell division and control mechanisms. Right there, I briefly mentioned the TP53 protein, an important cellular guardian that leads to apoptosis, which is controlled cell death, and how it plays an important role in cancer. Today, I will specifically mention the mTOR pathway, another intracellular signaling pathway that this cellular guardian communicates with, and ‘autophagy’, which is intracellular cleaning.

Cancer and Aging: The critical link in between

In this series, we will first take a broad look at the relationship between aging and cancer. Then, each week, we will focus on one of the sub-topics of this important topic in detail. Thus, by examining these relationships more closely, we aim to get closer to the longevity formulation each week.
